Monroeville Alabama - Monroe County Heritage Museum
Monroeville, Alabama - Monroe County Heritage Museum The old Monroe County Courthouse (now the Monroe County Heritage Museum), designed by prominent Southern architect, Andrew Bryan, was built between 1903 and 1904. The Courthouse is one of two building designed by Bryan (a sister courthouse in LaGrange, Georgia was destroyed by fire), with the architectural style of Romanesque with a Georgian influence. The courthouse was the seat of most county offices and the site of court cases until the construction of the the new courthouse was completed in 1963. Today the building is on the National Historic Register and is a national literary Mecca. The old courthouse resembles the 1930s courtroom used for Harper Lee's fictional courtroom settings in To Kill a Mockingbird. Although the movie was not filmed here, the interior of the courthouse was used as a reference for the film version of the book, and houses the later acts of the amateur production.
