The primary purpose of the event was to call attention to the unresolved $5 billion punitive damages court case against Exxon. Over 6000 plaintiffs in the case have died since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and it has been 12 years since the jury trial awarded the plaintiffs $5 billion.
