Thursday, many will take the day off in celebration of Alaska Day. But will they know why? If not, here's a quick history lesson: Alaska Day is the anniversary of the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States. It took place in Fort Sitka in 1867. Thursday is a paid holiday for state of Alaska employees. All state offices will be closed, as well as state courts. The Alaska Native Heritage Center will be closed, as well. Everything else will be business as normal. Downtown Anchorage meters will need to be fed.
