Therese Stewart, Chief Deputy Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco
When San Francisco's Mayor, Gavin Newsom, first attempted to legalize same-sex marriage in 2004, Therese Stewart was part of the legal team representing the city. Now Chief Deputy Attorney for the city and county of San Francisco, Stewart went to the California Supreme Court and won an end to the ban against same-sex marriage on May 15, 2008. According to her, Perry v. Schwarzeneggar is not all that different from how previous monumental civil rights cases have played out in the US justice system. Stewart and her wife, Carol Scagnetti, who is an attorney and head of Marriage Equality USA, exchanged vows the summer before Proposition 8 passed.
