Assemblymember Allen Joins National Coalition Seeking to Overturn Citizens United
(Sacramento) -- As the Iowa Caucus kicks off the official beginning of the 2012 presidential election race today, Assistant Majority Floor Leader Michael Allen (D-Santa Rosa) joined Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) and leading public interest advocates to announce they are introducing a resolution urging Congress to pass a Constitutional amendment overturning the Citizens United campaign finance ruling. The controversial 5-4 US Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission overturned longstanding precedent prohibiting corporations from spending their general treasury funds in our elections. The ruling unleashed a torrent of corporate money into our political process. A Survey USA poll found that 78 percent of respondents thought corporations should be limited in the amount they are allowed to spend to influence elections.
