Beta Zeta Mu nominee for regional president of Iowa Phi Theta Kappa 2011
Hi I'm Zach Murrell. I'm a member in Beta Zeta Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Western Iowa Tech Community College I'm 16 and a junior at Sergeant Bluff- Luton High School and I take several classes each semester at the college. I decided to run for regional president for several reasons, principally because I think I could bring a unique perspective to the position, being in high school and college at the same time where I have gained a large amount of experience despite my age. I've been a member of Phi Theta Kappa for over half a year, in which time I've gotten a taste for the great things the scholars in Phi Theta Kappa do for the community. I participated in a silent auction, calling winners to let them know they won free hotel stays, free tattooing, and even a computer. I really enjoyed raising the money for the Food Bank of Siouxland's backpack program to help kids at local schools have something nutritious to eat over the weekend. In addition to my interest in expanding my involvement with Phi Theta Kappa, I also work to be involved in my high school and the community. Accordingly, I volunteer every month at South Sioux City's teen court program, acting as jury foreperson. We teenage volunteers work as jurors and attorneys to help other teenagers guilty of relatively minor offenses like shoplifting or minor assault.
