FCBCTV's Black History Moment Featuring Brown vs. Board of Education Hosted by Taji Coleman Faithful Central Bible Church 333 W. Florence Avenue Inglewood, CA 90301 (310) 330-8000 In 1951, Oliver Brown along with several other parents, requested an injunction to forbid the segregation of the Topeka Kansas public school system. African American families attempting to enroll their children in these dominant white schools, were denied entry. The NAACP's chief counsel, Thurgood Marshall, who later became the first African-American Justice on the US Supreme Court, argued that this was in violation of the 14th amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees equal protection of the laws for all citizens. On May 17, 1954, after 3 years of intense litigation, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Brown. This victory paved the way for integration, the civil rights movement and has become one of the most significant, judicial turning points, in the history of our country.
