Underground Railroad Coalition of Delaware -- Brian Cannon Tells of Thomas Garrett Trial
Partial video of Brian Cannon (Interpreter at the Old New Castle Courthouse Museum in DE) telling in first person the story of Thomas Garrett's 1848 trial for assisting in aiding a runaway slave family to escape from New Castle to Pennsylvania. A federal court was seated at the New Castle Court House to hear evidence on charges of violating the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. The trial was presided over by United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney. Garrett, and his co-defendant John Hunn were found guilty and fined, but both continued ushering slaves to freedom. Video provided courtesy of Ms. Nichole Bright.
