Thomas J. Rusk is the most significant political figure associated with Nacogdoches. He was an Indian fighter, lawyer, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Commander-in-chief of the Texas Army, Secretary of War, Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, President of the Constitutional Convention, and one of Texas' first two United States Senators. Despondent over the death of his wife, he took his own life in 1857 after ordering her grave stone.
